On the road

On this blog I concentrate on destinations. Unfortunately this misses out on the main aspect of travelling – getting from one place to another. There are so many experiences along the way. Would you expect being pulled up for a … Continue reading

Lake Houdraman, near Quilpie

An other beautiful spot in Western Queensland. As Lesley put it on her facebook page when asked whether we were alone: A couple of vans and a tent but all a good distance away. More cattle and birds than anything … Continue reading

Lake Houdraman – more 2

Some sad news in Quilpie, just before we arrived. From the ABC website: ‘Defence personnel have marched through the south-west Queensland town of Quilpie to honour a fallen colleague. A hometown memorial service has been held for 40-year-old Lance-Corporal ‘Rick’ … Continue reading

Coopers Creek

From Windorah we followed the Diamentina Development Road for a short distance until we crossed Coopers Creek on a long and narrow bridge. I concentrated on keeping the rig going straight across the bridge – Lesley concentrated on possible camping … Continue reading

Windorah

From Longreach we followed the Thompson Development Road to Windorah. We knew the road was going to be a one lane road, meaning only a section in the middle of the road is paved. If two vehicles are crossing, one … Continue reading

Longreach

Leaving Lloyd Jones Weir we refuelled in Barcaldine before heading to Longreach. Listening to the ABC we learned that Longreach was celebrating its 125 year anniversary. As a consequence it was quite busy. We walked around in the Business Centre … Continue reading

Barcaldine – Lloyd Jones Weir

Heading towards Lloyd Jones Weir the GPS lead us astray once more. Ended up on a dirt road that appeared to head off in the wrong direction. We turned around when we came to an area that gave us enough … Continue reading

Bedford Weir to Lloyd Jones Weir

Leaving Bedford Weir after a few pleasant days of R&R we were heading West. In Emerald we filled up water and fuel. Didn’t spend much time there – only pictures I took were of the railway station. It is a … Continue reading

Blackdown Tableland National Park

I read about the Blackdown Tableland National Park and wanted to include it on our itinerary. This is the reason we camped at the Bedford Weir. Otherwise we probably would not have gone East. I am certainly glad we did … Continue reading

Bedford Weir, Blackwater

We spent a pleasant 5 days (4 nights) at the Bedford Weir some 25km north of Blackwater. The weir is damming the Mackenzie River and is a playground for water sport as well as for birds. Not much to do … Continue reading

Springsure

Setting our GPS to find the way to the Springsure cemetery lead us astray. Why can we only use GPS to get us to places that are easy to find? We made it to the cemetery. If only we had … Continue reading

The Virgin Rock

Overnight we stopped at the Virgin Rock rest area just north of Springsure. This is another camping stop provided by the local community free of charge. Maximum stay is 24 hours so there is a steady change of occupants. It … Continue reading

The Staircase Range

The Staircase Range between Rolleston and Springsure might not rate as a destination of its own but it certainly is worthwhile to stop at the Staircase Lookout. The vegetation is quite unusual. The information display tells us about the significance … Continue reading

Rolleston

Rolleston is another small town in the Banana Shire. Lesley’s mother, although born in Springsure, spent her early years in Rolleston and I expected to find more traces of her family. Rolleston has placed heritage walk plaques throughout the township … Continue reading

Isla Gorge National Park

On the way from Theodore to Taroom and back we dropped into a couple of different locations in the Isla Gorge National Park. On the way down we checked out the Isla Gorge Picnic Area, just a short detour from … Continue reading

Theodore – Taroom

Theodore is a small town in the Banana Shire in Central Queensland. It doesn’t offer many attractions, but is a good base to explore the surrounding area. Camping in the showgrounds with well looked after facilities is a cheap alternative … Continue reading

Cania Dam

Cania Dam picnic area is a lovely spot to while away the afternoon. As Lesley was not up to walking due to sore hips, we went off in search of internet reception. I wanted to check on the budget speech, … Continue reading

Cania Gorge

The scenery in Cania Gorge is amazing. The rock formations on either side of the gully are impressive. Rocks fallen from the cliff faces can be seen everywhere and look like they have been thrown by giants, landing at incredible … Continue reading

Kinbombi Falls

Kinbombi Falls are in the midst of cattle country near Goomeri. The rolling hills would not suggest that close by is a deep gorge cut by a creek into the rocks. We can hear the water running down the waterfalls … Continue reading

Kinbombi Falls

2:00pm and we are set up for the night at Kinbombi falls. We are sitting in the shade, waiting for it to cool down. We are planning a walk to the lookout over the falls and hopefully find a geocache.
