The Virgin Rock

Overnight we stopped at the Virgin Rock rest area just north of Springsure. This is another camping stop provided by the local community free of charge. Maximum stay is 24 hours so there is a steady change of occupants. It is located in front of these mountains that are called Virgin Rock. Those with enough imagination can see Virgin Mary in the rocks.

We walked down to the end of the road, as close as possible to the cliff. We crossed a little creek.

The rocks are illuminated at night and it looks quite pretty.

In the morning with the rising sun illuminating the rock the view was spectacular.

When we arrived at the rest area a caravan was parked there without a vehicle. It turns out they had gone off and driven to the top of the rocks. From our side this seems impossible. According to the driver, it is a fairly easy drive on the other side of the rock. The view over Springsure and to the other side over the Carnarvon range from the Virgin Rock is spectacular, he told me.

We had good company at the rest area. We had happy hour with a couple from Newcastle also in a Kedron Van travelling together with friends in another van. It was too late to go to the Springsure cemetery – we planned that for the following morning.
