Cowaramup and Vasse Felix – reposted

On Saturday we planned to go to lunch at Vasse Félix, the first vineyard in the Margaret River region. The restaurant has a great reputation and we treated ourselves to the lunch as a birthday lunch for Lesley. We were a bit early so we drove to Cowaramup for a look around. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cowaramup%2C_Western_Australia Many places in this area end with ‘up’. This is an aboriginal term which roughly translates to ‘place of’. In this particular name ‘Cowaramup’ means the place of the Purple Crowned Lorikeet. But because of the ‘Cow’ part of the name, the town is also known as ‘Cow Town’.

In 2010 Margaret River hosted the Cow Parade, an event that started in Zurich back in 1998. We were in Switzerland at the time and we certainly remember all the painted fibreglass cows in the centre of Zurich. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CowParade This particular cow was part of the Cow Parade in Margaret River.
But Cowaramup took the idea of the cows a lot further than the cow parade. They wanted to create a township where cows where part of the town, finding their place throughout the main street. They created this herd that inhabits the town. Lots of photos that should give you an idea how the cows are part of the town.

Cows are quite a part of the Cowaramup area. The area produces 10% of Western Australia’s milk. Therefore using the cow to promote the area is not an artificial promotional idea.

There are nice parts of the town such as the park with the old church.

Lunch was delicious and the ambiance to match.

The gardens at Vasse Felix are immaculate.

Throughout the grounds sculptures from the Holmes à Court Collection are displayed. At the moment the exhibition is called ‘The Art of Sound’ and at each sculpture there is music playing.

Even if you just go for the wine tasting, I am sure you would enjoy the experience.
