Winton – Bladensburg National Park

It was a fairly long drive into Winton along very dry countryside. But it was an interesting ride passing these mesas along much of the way.

We had been to Winton on the way out to the Northern Territory, actually spent more time there then we wanted to as we had to wait for the garage to open to replace the batteries in the LandCruiser. We had lunch in the bakery and headed out to the Bladensburg National Park. We parked the Kedron at the Bough Shed Intersection, a National Park camping ground with few facilities.

It is next to the Surprise Creek and for me the surprise was that there actually was a little bit of water in the creek.

We enjoyed watching birds once more. A pair of red-winged parrots kept us entertained for about half an hour.

(Lesley’s photo) No idea what this fellow is.

(Lesley’s photo) Perhaps a pair of White-breasted woodswallows.

(Lesley’s photo) A Spinifex pidgeon – note the long spike like extension on the head.

We saw some kangaroos – this one coming for a drink.

and then taking off at speed.

Here it is lifted into the air, just supported by it’s strong tail.

Here a kangaroo has climbed the creek bank and feeds on the grass.

Just watching us.

(Lesley’s photo) Is this a Rainbow bee-eater?

(Lesley’s photo) Perhaps a Pallid cuckoo?

    Great bird shots

Your Spinifex pigeon is very similar to what we call top knotch pigeon in Vic. Lovely birds anyway, whatever they are called. Keep enjoying yourselves, we are heading to Leonora tomorrow.

Those first few photos remind me of when we went through Utah!
