Day trip to Rainbow Valley, Hugh River Stock Route and Ewaninga Rock Carvings

28th May 2015
We went for a round trip to the south of Alice Springs. We really wanted to see Rainbow Valley as people had told us it was a fantastic area. We certainly weren’t disappointed.

There is an easy walking path on rubber mats that eventually leads to the Mushroom Rock. (Lesley’s photo)

We continued our trip, heading east along the Hugh River Stock Route. This is also an interesting area.

We stopped to check out a geocache. This would have been quite a treat for kids! Quite appropriate for the location.

We didn’t encounter many vehicles on this road – but we sure saw them coming thanks to all the dust that is thrown up on this dusty surface.

Next stop was at the Ewaninga Rock Carvings, an aboriginal sacred site with rocks having been carved a long long time ago.

Returning to Alice Springs we saw The Ghan railway pull through The Gap. Having crossed the tracks of the Old Ghan a few times, we thought the new Ghan was worth a photo. I wouldn’t mind doing the trip one day.
