14th July, 2016.
We are gradually getting closer to our planned stay at Karijini National Park but, as it is still school holidays, we are taking our time in the hope it will not be too crowded when we arrive. The Albert Tognolini Rest Area is located off the Great Northern Highway not too far north of the turn to Karijini so we deemed it a good stopover for a night.
What a gem it turned out to be. No facilities apart from a few picnic tables and bins but it is a huge area well away from the highway and the views are spectacular. There were only a few vans there when we arrived and we found ourselves a nice quiet spot for the night.
We had no idea who Albert Tognolini was but information in the picnic shelter told us all about him.
The next group of photos were taken by me from the car on our way to the rest area. Not great shots but they show the rugged terrain that we were now entering which was a nice change from the flat areas on the western coast.
The following photos were taken from various parts of the rest area.
The road that we travelled up on can be seen in the middle of this picture.
A closer shot of the Great Northern Highway.
It was a clear, starry night but very windy.
And a very cold and clear morning had us searching for our warmer clothes.
